Psychologists in Australia lack standard family violence training, study finds
A new commentary by Lata Satyen, Karen Williams and Kelsey Hegarty (published online 1 June 2026) warns that most Australian professional psychology courses do not include mandatory training in family, domestic and sexual violence. Psychologists are frequently positioned to support victim‑survivors but may lack the specific skills and awareness needed to do so safely and effectively. Mandatory, evidence‑based and culturally appropriate training on prevention, intervention and recovery is needed to more adequately support victim‑survivors, enhance service engagement, strengthen multidisciplinary responses and reduce clinician vicarious trauma.
