Parenting
Over Violence:
Understanding and Empowering Mothers Affected by Adolescent
Violence in the Home
In 2008, the Patricia Giles Centre received funding
from the Department for Communities (Women’s
Interests) to complete a research project exploring
the issue of adolescent violence towards mothers in
Western Australia. The project, entitled “Parenting
Over Violence”, aimed to explore this issue
from the perspectives of mothers and professionals
across WA who have had experience with it.
In total, 20 service providers from a range of agencies
across the state and 7 mothers who have experienced
abuse from an adolescent son or daughter participated
in the project. These participants described their
experiences, offered some insight into the issue,
and provided recommendations for future research,
practice and consideration. “Parenting Over
Violence” commenced in June 2009 and was completed
in June 2010.
