16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence

November 25 - December 10

The United Nations UNiTE 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign runs every year from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, up until 10 December, Human Rights Day. The campaign emphasises the importance of ensuring activities to support this campaign are ‘survivor centered’ and take an approach which respects survivors and empowers them to exercise their agency.

WHAT’S ON AT SAFER FAMILIES CENTRE DURING THIS 2023 CAMPAIGN ?

With the theme of this years 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence being "UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls", a number of our talented WEAVERs have 'united' via their art exhibition. This exhibition will run over the 16 days from November 25th to December 10 via the Safer Families Centre social media platforms. Each of our WEAVERs members will have a dedicated social media post each day showcasing their incredible artworks.

Check out our WEAVERs art exhibition here.

The WEAVERs are a group of women who have experienced domestic, family violence and/or sexual violence and who play a role in ‘weaving’ lived experience into research and training at the University of Melbourne.

A message from our WEAVERs:

’Allow yourself to be drawn into the beauty that evolved from so much fear and pain while reflecting on how far we've come in eliminating violence awareness and resources to better prevent and respond to gender-based violence’.

At the Safer Families Centre, we fundamentally believe that in order to end violence against women, the voices and expertise of victim-survivors must be at the core.

We work with our WEAVER survivor group to ensure lived experience informs and shapes our research and is weaved through our teaching and responses to domestic and family violence.
